Project Validation

As part of my project development I shared my work, in a professional setting, and received feedback on my contributions to Portsmouth Climate Action and the Kirsty Louise Streek Foundation. This included the creation of video interviews, event coverage, and social media content.

“The portfolio demonstrates strong engagement with real-world projects and effective use of digital media. The video interviews and social media content show a clear understanding of storytelling and audience engagement. To further improve, more consistency in posting and stronger time management would enhance the overall quality of the work. The feedback also highlighted the importance of continuing to build experience, either through additional volunteering opportunities or by undertaking a placement year to further develop my professional skills.”

This feedback helped me understand my strengths in content creation, particularly in video production and visual storytelling. It also highlighted areas for improvement, such as maintaining consistency and managing my time more effectively across multiple projects. Additionally, it reinforced the importance of continuing to gain practical experience in order to further develop my skills. As a result, I am motivated to pursue further opportunities, including additional volunteering roles and a potential placement year, to continue building my professional portfolio.

Reflection

I’ve learned a great deal while working on this project with Portsmouth Climate Action and the Kirsty Louise Streek Foundation. Overall, volunteering has been a highly rewarding experience. It allowed me to strengthen my CV, gain practical hands-on experience, meet new people, and build valuable professional connections in the industry.

One of the biggest benefits was the chance to develop my technical skills in video editing and content creation. Through projects like the Climate Champions series and regular social media content, I grew much more confident using Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Canva. I improved at structuring engaging content, maintaining visual consistency, and communicating ideas clearly to an audience. Filming, editing, and attending events also gave me a realistic understanding of how creative work operates in a professional environment.

There were challenges along the way. One of the main difficulties was communication. As is often the case in volunteering roles, responses and feedback could be slow, which sometimes disrupted my workflow. This taught me the importance of patience and flexibility in managing my time.

I also had to juggle multiple responsibilities across different projects, from filming and editing to content creation. This pushed me to become more organised and improve my time management. Stepping outside my comfort zone, particularly when interviewing people on the street or speaking with the public, helped me significantly strengthen my communication skills.

Despite these challenges, the experience was overwhelmingly positive. It supported both my personal and professional growth and enabled me to build a strong portfolio of work. Volunteering has opened doors I wouldn’t have had otherwise and has motivated me to keep developing my skills. I’m excited to be starting a new volunteering role as a Social Media Creator with The John A Thompson Memorial Trust, which will further expand my experience in digital content creation.

In conclusion, this project has given me a clearer understanding of what it’s like to work in a real-life creative environment and has helped me improve both my technical abilities and interpersonal skills.
